Figuring out the right style of music to be played at your wedding can be an extreme hastle. Wedding guests are typically spread across three generations, which means your event needs to cater to a large variety of people with different music preferences. Hiring a professional disc jockey is a step in the right direction, but it's very important to talk to you DJ about the type of music YOU want played at the event to ensure that your disc jockey brings the right style of music, especially if it is an obscure style.
DJs are very receptive to suggestions. Like in any profession, a DJ wants to make his or her life as easy as possible. Organize your guests into categories and determine which category is the majority. If it is determined that only 10% of the guests are under the age of 21, then the DJ won't have to load up on Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus tracks. If 10% or less of the guests are over the age of 60, then Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett don't need to dominate the playlist. Although it certainly isn't always fair to stereotype age groups, it is more likely that a 25 year old would prefer to listen to 90's Alternative Rock or Top 40 rather than the Jonas Brothers.
Make sure the DJ has music that you want to hear. Although you want your guests to have a great time, it is also important that you have a great time! If you hate country music, it's senseless to have only country music playing at your wedding. Make sure you give your DJ a list of songs and artists, or at least genres, that you want to hear at some point during your event. In the end, it's an event that you should remember for the rest of your life. As cliche as that may sound, it is the true reason why couples have a wedding reception in the first place.
Don't be afraid to ask the DJ to change a song or style of music during your event. You're going to be dishing out a large sum of money to your entertainer. Although you should not treat your DJ like a slave or minion, you are ultimately in control of your playlist for the night. If you see that a certain style of music is upsetting your guests, make the DJ aware of this. A quality DJ has the ability to read the crowd, but it's sometimes difficult to see how everyone is reacting to a particular song or genre. However, this does not mean that you should get worked up about the music. Everyone is not going to enjoy every song, that's the unfortunate reality of a society that possesses such a wide variety of music. Relax and enjoy your party and make music suggestions only when necessary.
Ultimately, it is important for you to realize that the music selection of the event is up to you. You can choose to make the DJ's job a little easier, which will make your event run a lot more smoothly, by classifying, and even surveying, your guests musical tastes. If you feel that the music just isn't working during the event, you can always ask the DJ to change the style to match what you want; however, if you hire a professional disc jockey with a quality reputation, you can expect the event to work out regardless if the "wrong" song is played at some point during the event. The important thing to remember is that you can alter the style of music at your event at any time, but more importantly, make sure you're having a good time at your party.
